The Roots of Boeing’s 737 Max Crisis: A Regulator Relaxes Its Oversight

送信時刻:

In the days after the first crash of Boeing’s 737 Max, engineers at the Federal Aviation Administration came to a troubling realization: They didn’t fully understand the automated system that helped send the plane into a nose-dive, killing everyone on board. (www.nytimes.com) さらに...

"the company asked to remove mention of MCAS from the pilot’s manual and the agency agreed"

But DID they remove it from the manual? No, they did not. The NYT knows we are all too lazy and stupid to look for ourselves (737-7/-8 System Differences Training Manual, page 748).

So The Company asked for it to be removed, the FAA approved it and The Company did not remove it ? ! ! Sounds to me like The Company had its act together and could not possibly release an airplane that dives into the ground . . .

Joe, you've missed the point again. I know the first year of the second grade can be tough, but please try to keep up.

Rather than nitpik the article for errors, we should discuss the main focus: Our trust and misunderstanding of technology. So, what scares me more than too much automation? Total automation. Folks, we're getting very close to the point where the entire aviation sequence is automated. If and when that happens there might no longer be a human in the cockpit to recall 'how hard' they tried to recover the plane. But it just wouldn't respond.

Rather than fall for a rather lame attempt to change the subject, we should discuss separate issues separately.

And by the way, nitpicking would be pointing out an incorrect date or a misspelled name. Nitpicking would not be pointing out a violation of one or more of the core principals of ethical journalism (especially from a news organization that holds itself in such high regard).
