Looks like the flight was on August 12, 2014. The report appears to have taken a little journalistic license with the routing. There was a stopover at LAX before going to VCV, perhaps to clear ICE?

Great Story. But I do not understand why Qantas would incur the expense to mothball their planes in Calif when surely there are plenty of suitable locations in Australia. Does it have something to do with the resale market?

That's a good question I've wondered the same thing. Possibly contractual for good rates in storage.... or if it's being scrapped I'm sure they go to who ever gives them the best rate.

Could have used the SYD-LAX sector for freight or a few pax. With QF financial situation anything should help!
