Harry, Most autopilots won't fly you out of somewhere you don't want to be automatically. If they are set to a heading and attitude that takes you away from the problem, okay. But if it is not configured accurately, it can fly you into the side of a hill just as easily. You still have to know where you are so to speak. He may have had a GPS with terrain mapping and or a radar altimeter to indicate his height above the ground but the S-76 is fast and he may have tried to pop out on top to return to visual flight conditions. Make sense?

Every pilot should have the #@*% scared out of them becuase most everyone has marched into a similar predicament at one point. "It looks lousy down there," turn that thing around, make a localizer or ILS back at BUR or VNY, but live to fly (fight) again. Boeing, Airbus, Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft, Cirrus etc., vs Earth, Earth wins every time. The pilot didn't want to disappoint the customer, break company rules, bust FAA regs, BUT make sure you can show up at your own hearing.

Why is VFR into IFR conditions still such a massive problem? This pilot wasn't some low time operator trying to get home, this was a big time helicopter with a guy that should have known better. All the resources available (including ground transportation)and this is the result.

He is definitely dealing with an C-5 attitude jammed into a light sport brain. I was not trying to excuse his complacency. After going through a Operation Pug in with Cleveland ZOB and approach a bunch of years ago, I have always had the highest regard for all controlers.

He will probably claim that he was not at the controls. Ever notice that names are kept off of flight plans? Fortunate that the area was not busier. Maybe he could update his knowledge with an instructor. This guys sounds like he is dealing with the old TRSA where all you do is make voice contact. Or next time just whiz through and leave the radio off.

As a pilot and a filmmaker, yes the long focal length magnifies the scene but you must agree that an above average portion of the landing gear service life was removed in five seconds flat. "Think we should have maintenance take a peak and the landing gear trunnion bearings before we fly her again...?" "Naaaa."
