Poorly written article... My God, who in the Air Force is that uninformed to not know that a huge percentage of Air Force missions are carried out by pilots who fly for the airlines AND the Reserves and Air National Guard. I was doing that in the sixties...which included a year in Vietnam. People were doing that for years before me and have been doing it ever since. Now, if the writer is saying that active duty pilots will be allowed to fly for the airlines simultaneously, or otherwise, then the host of issues that would pop up out of that arrangement would probably be unworkable... The answer to USAF and other military pilot retention is two-fold. Pay your pilots more and fly them more. If a guy is qualified to be a "fighter pilot" let him stay in the cockpit. Don't put him behind a desk, or worse yet, assign him to fly a freakin' drone. Another answer is quit getting in wars in the Middle East or anywhere else that last decades. Sorry, but what the hell are you talking about? Give me a fighter pilot any day of the week. And, I am saying this from thirty-seven years of flying for a major airline which included about twenty years of Check Airman work ( in 727, S-80, 757,767,777), instructing, line checks both domestic and international and FAA Designee. I had one man, a F-117 Gulf War I pilot, who was terrible. But, then, a F-117 is not a fighter, is it...? Other than that man, all were quicker thinkers, thought well ahead of the jet, flew smoothly, aggressive when needed, great radio procedures, quick studies, yada, yada, yada... Yep, give me an ex-fighter (or one still flying in the Guard) pilot any day of the week.

Peter. I beg to differ with you. I have flown hundreds of barrel rolls in my Christen Eagle II as well as other aerobatic aircraft. A perfect barrel roll can be flow at 1G -- it is all dependent on the rate of your roll maneuver. And, I do know the difference between an aileron roll and a barrel roll.

??? Where did you hear or read this? Show me a link or substantiate your claim. I know some gamers came out with a simulation online where people could try to land on the Hudson and some people succeeded and some failed. But, I have never heard of any test situation of real pilots in a real simulator trying to duplicate Sully's landing and fail, or otherwise.
