Pilot captures unbelievable photo of haboob sweeping over Phoenix

送信時刻:

On Sunday afternoon, a thunderstorm collapsed over Phoenix, and a downward burst of wind collected a towering plume of dust that swept across the region. To the east, a Southwest Airlines pilot, Ryan Vermillion, captured an unforgettable view of the gathering storm, known as a haboob. (www.washingtonpost.com) さらに...

I like how the article mentions that some Texas residents didn't like the term 'haboob'. Never mind it was the correct term, it's just.. well not Texan enough!

Howabout: "Haboob Y'all"?
ToddBaldwin3
That's because it's one of them furrin words from some furrin heathen lands.
Bobqat
How do they feel about tsunamis along the coast? (Not all that likely) =}
ayavner
They were probably just disappointed when it didn't turn out to be an actual boob.
PSUAth

Why are Arizonians like Texans? http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/22/us/22haboob.html?_r=0
Continuing the ridiculous theme of characterizing an entire population by a few examples.

I clicked on the link but there's no way I'm giving the Washington Post my email address, so no haboob video for me...
JimHeslop
First thing I thought was...Haboob? Isn't that Alladins cousin flying in?😂
JimHeslop
I don't know Arabic but I would assume that 'haboob' is their term to discribe the
dust-storm/microburst. And with that region of earth being made of...well...DUST...it would be internationally recognized as 'haboob'

But don't let Trump know this lest he change the movie 'Alladin' to something more American like...'DONALD' and instead if a flying carpet, rides in on a comb-over!
Bobqat
'Haboob' and 'shamal' were two Arabic words I learned as a youngster living with my folks in Saudi Arabia over half a century ago. Experiences of these I credit with my life-long fascination with weather.

Some folks in Texas are going to be mighty disappointed to have to start using Roman numerals for everything. "round these parts, we use 'Murrican numbers.."
old51crow
A lot of hubbub over a haboob, eh?
MikeMohle
Stop speaking Canadian, eh.
old51crow
"Hubbub" is popular with Canadians?
MikeMohle
No, but Eh sure is. LOL.

To be honest I find most people who use the Arabic for sand/dust storm are just doing ti b.c ha-boob sounds funny to them and they could care less if its Arabic, dutch or Klingon.
