That was a very nice looking Aircraft at the time.. I rmember 2 accidents in Le Bourget Airshow on JUn3rd1961 after a barrel during a display, crash 7 Nm of the field killing 3 crew, and the 2nd one on The Jun15 1965 comming from MAdrid crashed 600ft ahead of threshold killing the pilot and 2 wounded other crew. That was a super plane during coldwar..
Grew up on a farm in east central Minnesota. SAC had a low level (1500 feet) practice bombing run that was directly overhead. I remember B-47s, B-52s, and the B58 Hustler screaming overhead fairly regularly during 1961-62. It was heady stuff for a 17-18 yr old kid!
Picture with the two component pod (TCP) lower half was fuel and was intended to be dropped once empty and the upper half contained the nuclear weapon. Of course in training it just contained ballast. Ex/retired B-58 nav.
Used to see these on our trips to Indianapolis at Bunker Hill AFB, near Kokomo, Indiana, parked in their revetments along US31. Just a hot looking airplane. Sorry to say I never saw one in takeoff or in flight.
