We had the 917th here at Barksdale which had the 45th and 47th fighter squadrons. In 2011 our lovely government decided it would be cheaper to deactivate the 917th and send all of our A-10's to other places. I miss seeing them because you would see them just about every day. Now all we have left is the B-52. Great paint on that A-10.
The former England AFB,southeast of Barksdale AFB near Alexandria, LA, was home to the 23rd TFW's A-10 aircraft from 1981 until 1992, when that base was closed due to the 1991 BRAC recommendations.
Yes cliff, you would catch an A-10 at Barksdale with the EL tail every now and then.
PPick, some years ago, I was traveling across Hwy. 190 thru the Port Barre, Krotz Springs, Lottie, and Livonia area and had a flight of three A-10 aircraft leisurely fly past me at virtually tree top level. I barely heard them as they went by. A beautiful sight!
