Not in our lifetime.

I almost fell asleep reading the story. Smoke announced, 172, land.

Real Easy - Transfer the Warthogs to Army Aviation. Army Aviation has more pilots than the Air Force anyway.

I'll stick with the dumb-ass comments. I commuted Lake Geneva,WI to MDW every weekday for three years. The main rule: Check weather and get some pireps before taking off. A Cessna 172 doesn't like ice and either do I. I have 200 actual instrument hours, but still worried a lot about weather. If it looked like thunderstorms or icing we'd drive to the train station and get to work at 11 AM instead of 8:30. One day we I knew we had stretched it a little too much when we called a left downwind for 31L and the tower asked us to squawk ident. No IFR light on the tower. I bet my companion it would be turned on as we landed. It was and I was the dumb-ass that day.

I spent a lot of hours flying my Cessna 310 and later my Mooney over the Dakotas,Montana,Minnesota and the UP. I was always staying as far away from the oil-burner routes as possible.

I did this in 1975 with my Skyhawk. I was dropping off a charter. Enjoyable, but control kept yelling for more speed. That made sense,.

I wish I had known about saying the words unable during an IFR approach to a small Midwest Airport. I was stuck in a cloud layer abut 1,000 feet thick and was picking up ice on my trusty Cessna 172. I explained my icing situation to Center and asked for a 500 foot higher or lower path and I was declined. The controller kept asking if I was declaring an emergency but would not let me deviate. When I finally started the approach some ice stared coming off and when I landed )at full power) the rest of the ice came off. I have never been so scared in my life. I have rethought that approach many time and wish I had told the controller I was changing altitude in spite of his instructions. I was the only traffic at that airport. On the other end of the scale, I was IFR from Fargo to Eau Claire at 11PM at night and my engine failed. I told the controller my engine had quit and wouldn't restart and, after asking my glide parameters and other pertinent questions, in was what seemed lik

What a great field Meigs was. I loved flying in there at sunset. The beautiful skyline of Chicago. The only downside was the wave coming off of McCormack Place with a strong West wind and landing North.
