I wonder why they stop in St. John's. It's a classic place for a fuel stop, but the 737-700 has a range of 3440 nm, and yyz-dub is 2849 nm along the great circle route.

That's a perfect way to describe the entire shutdown: foolishly short sighted. The shutdowns in the 90's were hugely expensive for the government, and this one will be too. What's happening right now is that Congress is making a foolish decision that costs all of us lots of money, just to make a political point that the vast majority of Americans (including a majority of those opposed to the Affordable Care Act) agree is NOT worth shutting the government over. I'd like nothing better than to see the people stick it back to them at the ballot box. But in another way, I think the game should be cancelled. This is the same issue as Congress voting to allow the FAA, and only the FAA, flexibility during the sequester. By making the more visible problems go away, without fixing the whole thing, other, less visible, but just as important programs go unfunded for longer. If Congress still had to put up with the security lines and flight delays we saw in the first days of the sequester, d

It's also worth noting that airlines don't fly the shortest route, they fly the _fastest_ route, subject to airspace restrictions. It looks like the route varies considerably from day to day. Compare the close-to-great-circle route at http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SIA21/history/20130809/0300Z/KEWR/WSSS with the similar-to-the-cartoon route at http://flightaware.com/live/flight/SIA21/history/20130813/0300Z/KEWR/WSSS The IST-SYD route in the cartoon didn't look too far off either, but DFW-SYD went the wrong way around the world. There's also a big difference between the longest scheduled flight and the longest possible flight. If I recall correctly, the longest unrefueled flight in a commercial-sized aircraft was HKG-LHR via North America, travelling more than halfway around the world. But this was a demonstration flight with minimal cargo. Technically speaking, any plane capable of in-air refueling is limited only by crew endurance and engine lubrication/maintena

While of course the air wing uses fossil fuels, the biggest energy cost is the carrier itself, which is nuclear. I don't really see what the carrier has to do with emirates fuel costs.

I've been listening to the tower feed on liveatc. The airfield has been totally closed to non-lifeguard traffic since the accident, and at least two medevac helicopters have landed. They're starting to taxi other planes now, presumably to get them on their way.

I really love it. A year ago or so, discover discontinued their Secure Online Account Number program, only to bring it back after a couple of months, so it must have been more popular than they thought. Since at the end of the day I'm not responsible for paying fraudulent charges on my card, using the SOANs is mostly so that I don't have to deal with the hassle of cancelling my credit card, but I still really like it. I also use it to sign up for "free" trials, where they won't charge your card if you cancel within the first 14 or 30 days, but require a valid credit card up front. After I sign up, I shut off the SOAN, and then they can't charge me for something I don't intend to keep using after the trial.

Get a discover card. They have a feature called "secure online account numbers" that lets you easily create a new, totally valid CC number, that once used, can only be used by a single merchant. Any other use (if your CC number got stolen from their database) is automatically declined, and if you want to shut off that CC number, it's really easy to do by calling Discover.
