Thanks for the explanation. I'm looking forward to my next flight to europe with even thinner seat padding than before!

Re the cost of air travel: i have a wonderful old November 1942 war-time flight schedule for Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada). An economy return flight from Toronto to Vancouver cost $220 (average worker's weekly income was probably around $30). Today, the same flight costs about $600 (average weekly wage is about $1200). The 1942 flight required about 7 times the weekly wage; the 2019 flight costs about one-half of a weekly wage! The 1942 flight took about 15 hours with 5 stops en route; today's flights take a little more than 4 hours and fly non-stop. Does anyone have information about the seat pitch, number of seats, configuration and aircraft used at that time? Toronto-New York cost $45 and took two hours.

Obviously, I don't fully understand the definition of "seat pitch". I thought that it referred to the distance between the back of one seat to the front cushion of the seat behind it. This would mean that the thickness of the seat-back would only factor in to the number of rows an airline could squeeze in to an aircraft. The distance of x centimetres in seat pitch would remain constant for the number measured. Could someone expand on this confusion.

The arrest was made at the request of the US government which then exasperated the situation by taking months to come up with the official extradition documents. Canada has been attacked with trade sanctions since and now the executive is fighting the court rulings and the Canadian government and judicial systems are dragging out the process at a huge cost to our farming, mining and manufacturing industries.

I've used my laptop and cellphone in many countries in Western Europe and the UK and never had a problem accessing this website. If this continues, you might want to try a different server.

Read the preceding comment by Allen Sjolie: $9 an hour is a good wage in parts of India just as $40 an hour is a poor wage in parts of the USA. It is a separate issue from the quality of the workforce. India has developed an outstanding university system to create top of the line engineers in every field, as good as and even better than many comparable universities in the USA.

Your facts are correct but the personal comment was unnecessary and doesn't add to the discussion.

What angers me most is that this US federal and Washington state tax supported company virtually destroyed Canada's growing commercial aircraft manufacturing industry with its dishonest attack on Bombardier. Boeing's moral and manufacturing decline seems to coincide with its greedy executives/investors decided to move its headquarters from the boonies (Seattle) to the big city (Chicago). I don't recall the reasons given for this move and can only assume that it was to cater to the wishes of the company board members.

Toronto to Lisbon in a refurbished aircraft with mood lighting and seatback video but narrow seats short pitch even in the last rows with the 2-4-2 layout. Return flight on the original version with even tighter seats and knees crammed against the seat in front. Overhead drop down video screens every 4-5 rows with outdated movies. Meals and service good on-board but don't make up for lousy planes. Prices as high or higher than TAP direct flights and much higher for direct flights to Faro , the main winter destination.
