If the article has it's facts, this guy hid his addiction problem for 20 years. That happens all the time, I assume, but here the guy is a pilot. The usual signs of this type of addiction are fairly easy to spot, and family and friends usually know or suspect. So you might wonder how he pulled it off for so long? Is there such a thing as a 'high functioning' alcoholic?
Anyway, apparently, and fortunately, no serious accidents occurred on his watch.

There is such a thing as a high functioning impaired individuals. Some would mask the odor with commercial mouth rinsed with alcohol in it or really high octane aftershave were what we were told to watch for, or lots of visits to the head.

this appears to be an old article, however, the problem mentioned is not a new one..in the picture of him you can see the really ruddy complexion, which is a sign of a serious drinker..i hope he has found help and peace, because 20 years of addiction is not easily overcome...

from my experience with close associates and a family member with alcohol addicition, it is obvious to me a small percentage of certain genetic types are susceptable (to additiction behaviour) and, for them, it becomes an almost impossible issue to overcome.Even though they may desperately wish to.
I don't hold these individuals at fault, per se'. Because they seem to be powerless to control the influence of that lifestyle (emotional, conditional, perceptional, etc.). In the best case scenario these people seek help. But our current society punishes for these people to do so.
Sorry if I'm babbling and not making sense -I'm not forgiving this guy for his actions. No way. Just offering a tiny bit of sad insight the way I see it - and not backed by science.
