It seems to me there could be a market for a self-serve kiosk at airports where it can dispense prepaid envelopes. They would be big enough to enclose small items that can be dropped into the receptacle for mailing. It would charge a pretty good premium over actual mailing but that beats losing something that might be of much greater value or even sentimental value.

I know all TSA stations ar not created equal, but I "mispacked' on a commercial trip from JAX packing my toilet bag with my carry on. In it was an old restaurant style cork screw-bottle opener. ("Semper Paratus"). While I found the young agent a bit rude, he did ask if I wanted to mail it to myself since I could not take aboard.
LordLayton
I bet they take it home and use it themselves or sell it. I don't trust TSA agents as far as I could throw a bull by the noogies.
mwyss789
Well I know the TSA gives all the Swiss Army knives they confiscate to the States where it happens! Then they end up on eBay for about 20% max of a new one! I got a nice one for $10 that was $46 new but some dim bulb tried to carry it on a plane!! Once again proving the old saying: "There is NO cure for stupid!!"

Like everything else, into the government kitty, State or Fed, to pay a few bills. In this case it doesn't appear to stay with the TSA

Well, I hope someone got a good deal for my fluoride toothpaste they confiscated! My contribution to help with the national debt.

In Texas it ends up at one of 3 of 4 state surplus property disposal sites where anyone can walk in and buy it.

There are tubs and tubs of pocket knives , multitools cork screws tools all kinds of stuff.
Then there is the usual stuff like office furniture and state trooper cars and trucks etc.

The guns are melted down.......I wonder what happened to that $125.00 bottle of Perfume my wife had to drop?

I just read on Airnation.com of a TSA agent wanting a commericial airline pilot to break off the file on his swiss army knife. The pilot said "look Dumbass I have a crash hammer right next to me in the cockpit and you want me to do what? Why does the govt hire swiss army dildoes for TSA agents?

Leighton, yeah I've always wanted to say to a TSA screener, "I have three weapons on me, and you cannot take them away: My two hands, and my brain."

Of course, this is more of an ironic point to make, not a real event that I would have attempted. Would not have ended well........
BernardGaffney
Maybe you should go there and work to show them how it's done.. I am sure you wouldn't mind working for slave wages and putting up with opinionated a**holes all day. It would be like looking in a mirror all day for you.

I've always viewed individuals in this business in a loftier level than a lot of other industries, believing it calls out to people with a level of class that is respectable and that garners civility and deference from most. Don't make me be wrong - I hate being wrong.

Does this include the stolen iPads? I watched a news program that high lighted TSA agent stealing iPads and laptops. They were fired but the numbers of those stolen suggest that there is more people to catch!
tduggan2010
Tim Duggan 4
The items stolen by agents (ones who don't get caught) certainly won't end up in the official sale auctions. Those accidentally "left behind"? Well, I blame the owner of the device. I love the one where the stolen iPad had GPS locator:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsBr7WLtpZk

I've seen videos made showing you how to "protect" your valuable electronics from theft, but really if YOU allow it to happen from inattention or carelessness, well...do you deserve it? This video (below) is the "anal" way...I'd say just take them out and make them visible in the plastic basket, that way NO ONE can "sneak" it into their pockets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ9O9HDhgjQ

And of course, best to never put valuables into checked luggage!!
mfbutzin
mfbutzin 1
No what I saw was not in checked luggage it was in the walk thru and a agent stacked the tubs and slid the iPad out and hid it in another tub when the person was told to go back thru the scanner again. The two tubs where then put down at the agents feet under the table. Hocus Pocus now it there then it isn't.....Not in checked luggage.

A bunch of TSA style agents at LHR were arrested for rifling through the trash bins and selling items at the local swap meet II bet it could happen here)
Moviela
Just like the other branches of the Obama administration they sell the weapons overseas, and give a little bit to the homeless. Then pat themselves on the back.

Listen to the story. I don't know about other TSA units but down here they go to law enforcement. Other than Federal Surplus, which was in operation long before the TSA, none of this is Federal or part of any administration(other than TSA itself) and as I said below, this story wasn't instigated by the TSA; it was instigated by the station itself as a separate piece on the different functions and makeup of the airport itself.

Oh gee, another unwarranted knee-jerk right-wing screed to bash a Democrat. Who woulda thunk it?

Despite the fact that TSA was begun during the George W, Shrub..er, *bush*.. administration (see? I can do it too). Of course, if one had actually paid attention to the news story, one would have learned that weapons are given to local law enforcement agencies. Gee, Arkansas made almost $10,000 in one whole year, auctioning off other personal items! Well, that solves the deficit problem for the State!!

But, not the hummus shortage, apparently.......
preacher1
preacher1 5
Well, just a couple of things of interest:
It's not just a part time thing for helping the homeless here, by TSA. There are many helps to the homeless, and other charities, that are very sincere; This whole piece was not initiated by TSA. It was initiated by KTHC ch 11, which is a Gannett property. Realizing it was said in sarcasm but Arkansas has a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget, one of only a handful of states that do so. That is the premise Clinton operated from while he was in office. Of course, he took over from Bush Sr., who gave him a head start.

I call the government for the people by the people. Blue grass and red dirt moral values.

Tim I have to agree with you... I used to enjoy reading comments about aviation related stories and I know there is probably a good mix of left and right here but it bugs me to no end that every TSA story is somehow linked to the current administration while Tom Ridge and John Ashcroft are sitting somewhere chuckling and comfortably enjoying retirment while flying on private aircraft time donated by their wealthy friends.
mfbutzin
mfbutzin 2
Look I'm from Texas and don't really care for Ashcroft, Ridge or W. Bush. The TSA was created after the Israeli El Al model, which works for them. We are a bunch of little brats that is spoiled rotten, we do not want anybody telling us what we can and cannot do. We witnessed it with seat belts back in the day and now we are again seeing with TSA. YES, problems have developed. Why? because we are little brats and we hired those brats to over see people doing stupid things, like bringing a gun on a aircraft.

I witnessed it in London when a fellow Texas had three bullets in the bottom of one of his bags. Now knowing the complete restrictions on such in England I was not amazed when the man faced charges and paid fines and was refused entry. So the bratty American was totally amazed when he was told to return home and he made a big scene about it. He stance was tow bullets SO WHAT? I don't like taking my shoes off and walking on the floor because I am diabetic, but to get on the plane I have to do it! I don't care if you don't like it I don't want people to smuggle things on a aircraft that may cause it to not arrive at the destination.

The word is SAFETY, El Al will not let people board if they look sketchy and they cannot confirm who they are. Nothing about their system is not political they have enemies that want to take them down and now so do we, the same enemies so our actions must be equal to El Al's. The problem with TSA is the quality of the people screened and passed for the job, the ones that steal are of low morals, the people who think it is funny to put someone on a no fly list, just because are also of low morals. Did I mention a persons political color? NO? Ok then As Americans we astonish ourselves from good deeds to horrible personal actions and this is what the problem is with the TSA. IMHO.
KennyFlys
Ken Lane 2
The TSA can't possibly be modeled after El Al. They are not that dumb to sink to the standards we have wit these idiots employed with our tax dollars.

I do take issue with removing my shoes and many other stupid restrictions. I'll believe in the TSA just as soon as the number of terrorists stopped exceeds the number of TSA employees convicted of crimes while on the job. Thus far, it's terrorists zip and over three hundred TSA employees arrested and convicted. How many more were fired and not arrested?
mfbutzin
mfbutzin 1
yeah that's the low moral character thing along with the power trip the head gets when placed in that position. I have also seen it in cops....The "GOD" syndrome thing. My brother practiced that when he was law enforcement.....
JetMech24
JetMech24 1
How can they stop terrorists that don't even make an attempt since the TSA has been in place?
KennyFlys
Ken Lane 1
Actually, they have made attempts but not with the use of aircraft. There are means of detecting potential terrorists without violating the civil rights of US citizens. Unfortunately, that's all the TSA is any good at.
JetMech24
JetMech24 1
So how can the TSA stop terrorists from getting on aircraft that they are not attempting to get on?
KennyFlys
Ken Lane 1
Let's put it this way... the original security that was in place before by private entities could be charged with the same process and without violating civil liberties. I believe it's SFO that uses a private contractor. I've heard it's practically night and day in their checkpoints compared to other airports.
66lima
My only disagreement with your post is that it is a dumb idea to have armed taxpayers on an airliner.
If anyone thinks that 9-11 would not have ended differently had CHL holders been allowed to carry as passengers on those planes then I don't know what to say to them.

KennyFlys
Ken Lane 2
The statistic of only 0.8% of CHL holders have ever been involved in a crime is a good indicator they're better capable than most.
mfbutzin
mfbutzin 1
Richard how about NO! One dipsh Texan suggested to give everyone on board a gun then pick them up after landing. So what if a high jacker is on a plane with a CHL? Shall he be the only there packin?
66lima
The chances of him being the only one carrying are only exceeded by the chances of him getting a CHL.
I predict he wouldn't get very far. Unless he boarded in DC or Chicago the cities with the most strict gun laws and the murder meccas of the US.
Either way never again will the passengers just sit there and take that crap.
I think that message has gotten through.
And that was not some dipshit Texan.
That was Archie Bunker , Carol O'Connor, doing a rebuttal to a TV station editorial way back in the 70s.
He was way ahead of his time.
And that solves your concern that a terrorist could be the only one on board armed.
You should thank him for alleviating your concern rather than call him a dipshit.

Note: calling someone a " dipsh Texan " makes you look like a dipshit.
mfbutzin
mfbutzin 1
Archie Bunker was and is a fictional character, Carol O'Conner was a very talented man who spoke his lines written by comedy writers. Which included Rob Reiner. I as a Native Texan shall call my fellow Texans with dipsh ideas when and as necessary as a Texan.
66lima
Well have a good time with your name calling, then.
It is very intimidating and has made me totally see your side of the argument and I have change my mind completely and now agree with you.

(Insert eye roll here)

mfbutzin 1
You do know "Archie Bunker" was a bigot? (insert eye roll here and tsk tsk)!
66lima
Archie was and is a fictional character I was told. Who knew?
In any event his idea of arming the passengers would certainly have ended the hijacking problem.
preacher1
preacher1 2
He may have been fictional but he represented much of mainstream America at that time, which accounted for such a long run and the fact that he is still such a well known name. Problem is nowadays is that the "MEATHEADS" are getting in the majority.
66lima
It is pretty easy to round up the support of the meat heads when you promise them free stuff paid for by worker bees.
You hit the nail on the head.

I personally wouldn't criticize unless I knew I could do better. There aren't a lot of people around who can do everything right when running the most powerful nation on the planet. To call him stupid is, well, stupid.
mfbutzin
mfbutzin 1
Oh I didn't call anyone stupid just the current condition of the TSA and how it was setup. This was during the days following 911 and everyone wanted to stop hijackers, me included. I voted twice for W. once as Gov. and once for Pres. I have been to the White House three times and am very aware of the rigors of that job. I spent years of following the orders of the office of the President of both parties without question. Like many other things an idea in the moment may seem great but over the long run it breaks down, then no one wants to touch it!
blake1023

I would think being a Liberal you'd like more government, not sure why you're bashing George W. Bush. Barack Hussein Obama (thats his name FYI, I didn't make it up) has a history of selling guns to folks in Mexico, called fast and furious! Not to mention, Barack Hussein Obama's DHS has bought more than a billion bullets, 7,000 guns, and armored trucks. One has to wonder... I dont think Mr. Warnkie is to far off the beaten path.

My pal in Utah tells me there is a buying battle going on between the people and the government over the ammunition. Personally I support the second ammendment but then I am not a USAer.

4 dead Americans in Benghazi and 1 dead border patrol agent. As Hillary Clinton would say "what difference does it make". Or Barack Hussein Obama, those are just "phony scandals!” Barack Hussein Obama, supports the Muslim brotherhood, willing to arm “rebels”. So let me get this straight he’s willing to arm and support terrorist, but god forbid I own a 15 round magazine. Right!

Well, I am going to try and keep the politics out of it, but you can't turn your back on BenGhazi and fast and furious without laying blame somewhere, for inaction and stupidity and then denial, plus all the other crap that has come along since then that no one is responsible for. I really don't give a damn what party leads us as President but they have to be better than what we have now and having such a pretty record as Secretary of State, we sure as hell don't need a round or 2 of Hillary. My non political discourse for the day. Have a nice evening folks. I'm outa here.
