First of all, it's ALASKA AIRLINES and specifically the company is called Alaska Air Group, Inc. which is also the parent of Horizon Air Industries, Inc., commonly known as Horizon Air.

Clark & Lewis would be shaking their heads!

Another Airline Merger, just what the country needs more layoffs and a furthering of Monopolistic practices.

Sounds like an awesome deal, considering America West and US Aiways still are having embroiled Union combining issues. Then, you add a third Union seniority list? I don't think this could even be considered a "good deal."

NO! Keep your damn hands off Alaska..... why do the good ones always fall prey to the ones that are at the other end of the spectrum?

Seems like a good fit as far as service (or lack thereof) goes. They can share last place together.
Almost no overlap of routes, but then not much to feed each other as many other airlines provide direct service to more distant destinations in Northeast.
Almost no overlap in equipment...USAir is an AirHearse Airline and Alaska is all Boeing.
Both are likely to go under together or separately as the big two get their acts together over the next couple of years with AMR running behind like an unwanted Yorkie.

On a combined basis, Alaska Air Group capacity increased by 4.8 percent to 2,573 million ASMs, while traffic increased 6.0 percent to 2,183 million RPMs, resulting in a 0.9-point increase in combined load factor. These statistics include flights operated by SkyWest for Alaska under their capacity purchase arrangement, but exclude flying operated by other third party carriers.

Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air, subsidiaries of Alaska Air Group (NYSE:ALK - News), together serve more than 90 cities through an expansive network in Alaska, the Lower 48, Hawaii, Canada and Mexico. Alaska Airlines ranked "Highest in Customer Satisfaction Among Traditional Network Carriers" in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 North America Airline Satisfaction Studies(SM). So much for service US air bought PSA and America west and drop lots of citys on the West coast both times. How will they run Horizon...in to the ground?

Alaska will not allow themselves to be bought by US Airways. Delta or Southwest on the other hand......

Let's get it strait. America West bought US Airways and kept e name. That is why the airline is based in the West, Phoenix.

When all the takeovers and mergers are said and done, there will only be one super-mega-airliner left in the US one day, and then it'll go bankrupt and the government will have to rescue it, thus becoming a state-run airline. That's what my crystal ball says....

Well that's why USAirways is ranked so low. They are being run by Amateur West. What an goofed up idea that was.

Alask Air Group themselves had said that they weren't interested in merging when Delta was thinking of buying them. As a frequent flyer of Alaska and Horizon I think it's to their benefit to stay independent. They have built a reputation of eccelent service, and the last thing they need to merge with an airline that is notorious for it's awful service. So US, keep your hands off AS!!

Wow, USAir has money? No way!

US does have some beat up old Boeings in their fleet. Primarily the 734, but also a few 757s and 767s. I think they are due to be retired soon. Currently, the fleet looks to be about 20% Boeing, but I'm just making a quick and dirty estimate using numbers from Wikipedia.

The question is: what is American doing while all the others are marrying each other, buy US Airways out, does it make sense?

American doesn't have money to buy anyone right now.

I think American would be a more likely candidate for a merger with US Airways there is also very little overlap in route structure and with USA's presence in the Southeast it would give American more presence in an region where they currently have very little as far as domestic service goes. Also there is potential for fleet overlap with AMR holding talks with Airbus surrounding fleet renewal.

AA has and will continue to be resistant to a US Airways merge, but at a certain point soon, they will be so financially weak that they will reluctantly accept a US Airways offer, IMO.

Delta would make a better suitor for the Alaska/Horizon network. Take Horizon out of the mix and Southwest makes sense, especially with the Hawaiian and Alaska markets. The Alaska fleet will mesh better with Southwest or Delta too.

The problem for US Airways is they don't have any cash or profits while Alaska is flush with cash and very profitable for an airline.

I think this article is a hoax as the author doesn't even know the name of the airline (they said Alaskan throughout). Zero mention of this story in Seattle news media.

I think it was a rushed article before it was checked. Its like the author got a morsel of "possible" info and rushed to print. I checked back and the article was removed saying it was removed by the editor. What do you think?

Fleagle concurs with MANBOI on all counts.
