Woman arrested at AUS after refusing grope

送信時刻:

Early Wednesday morning, a computer glitch shut down a security checkpoint for a couple of hours at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The line snaked out the door as many travelers waited for more than an hour and some missed their flights. One of the first people in line after that shutdown never made it through. She was arrested and banned from the airport. (www.kvue.com) さらに...

So now you get arrested for refusing the enhanced pat-down? Or, are we getting the entire story here?

So the TSA contridicts itself, stating; "We treat the passengers with dignity" and then drags this lady across the floor .... in front of the other passengers ... How is that dinified ? TSA should equate to TERMINAL SCREWBALLS AGENCY

"The TSA says less than three percent of travelers get a pat-down. "

I call bullshit. ANYONE who refuses a back scatter automatically gets an enhanced pat down. Are they claiming that only 3% of the populace is refusing back scatter scans? Or are they saying only 3% of the traffic is actually subjected to the option to say no to irradiation?
padgettrea
Gwen Washington - "...but it is for our protection so I have no problems with it" -- perhaps we should submit to stripping in public to our underwear so that we get a show and she feels safer?

Emily Protine - "...it makes me feel a little safer" -- only a little?? I would think with our security system in place everyone should feel completely safe.

"TSA says less than three percent of travelers get a pat-down" -- And a single person less than that "less than three percent" is reason for a public show of authority?

Although I can't blame them... this lady obviously acted and looked the part of a terrorist willing to blow up a plane with a tube of toothpaste.

AMTRAK ALL THE WAY!

When I was leaving San Diego on the 11th of December, everyone got some sort of pat down while I was in line. They told me the scanner didn't get my upper body, so they just patted down my arms.
jnikiel
AMTRAK is next, unfortunately. And then highway checkpoints. What fun!

Something stinks about the way this is reported. It comes across like the lady did absolutely nothing wrong and got the beat down put on her. I'm willing to make a wager that she put up some high-holy screaming fit and got restrained like the out of control crazy she was.

All of this scanning stupidity can be stopped as soon as the TSA starts getting proactive with their screening rather than reactive to the most recently failed or successful attack. And I'm not talking about profiling. They are getting enough money these days to put some thought into what and who the security threats are likely to be.

Besides, between cell phones and airport body scanners, tumors are gonna be the "in" thing to have in 15 years! Think of how cool we're all gonna be!

The scanners and pat downs do not detect items hidden in body cavities, according to several news accounts. So are these scanners and gropes really providing the level of security as being implied? Is TSA is only focusing searches ‘where the light is better’ and ignoring a gaping hole security? I have heard the increased invasive techniques are slowly being ramped up (think boiling a frog) and will be appearing in subways, bus and train stations, based on the procedures being accepted by the flying public. Does the flying public really accept these procedures or are they afraid to speak up because of what dissenters have faced when confronting TSA or are ignorant of the actual system defects?

pretty soon obama will personally give us cavity searches before we drive our cars or leave our houses. next is reeducation camps and the outlaw of cars!

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

Contract security out to Shin Bet. Ever hear of El Al losing a plane?

If she did have a medical device implanted then she should have the documentation to back that up.

To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin's quote - we do not deserve freedom or liberty as long as we allow this unconstitutional crap to continue.

HMMM. I was a Paramedic in New York City and for the life of me can not figure out what the "equivalent of a pacemaker" is nor WTF "a pacemaker-type device" is.
You either have or you do not have a pacemaker. I have seen peeps with pacemakers get X-rayed, so I am not buying this.

I agree with 99NY! There is probably more to the story, but the liberal press chooses to not report all the facts.
(like THAT is a news flash!)

Austin is not exactly a podunk town, so the chances of their PD just victimizing this woman for S&Gs, is possible, but not very likely.
MaxTrescott
I've read somewhere that it is against the law to refuse to continue with a TSA screening once a passenger has started the process. The justification I read was that otherwise terrorists could continually test TSA security and back out of the process at any point where they felt they might be caught. That may be the law that TSA felt she had broken.
damiross
David Ross 0
Yes, that's the stupid law. The options are either don't fly or submit to groping. If you start the procedure and then opt to not fly then you still have to go through security. That's what happened to the guy that said "don't touch my junk."
airclaxon1
Buy you one of those 40mph cars, and shut up !

I have a friend who works for ____ Airlines and he said a few pilots - he swears - go into a restroom and work up a boner (!) just prior to going through TSA, and that one pilot was actually groped "down there" because the agent felt a "hard thing" in his pants. He didn't know what happened after that, but I'm sure that would put a halt to pat downs and groping if it became commonplace.
damiross
David Ross 0
If this is true then good for them!!! Give the poor, bored TSA agents something exciting to do.
MaxTrescott
Makes me think we're going to have two kinds of TSA employees: those who hate their job and those who can't wait to get to work!
kittyhawkdjs
Take a train, rent a car, walk for all I care. You don't agree with the policy, simple, don't fly.
flyingarmadillo
This is poorly written if you don't know the airport. This is not an issue about refusing a scanner - AUS has no backscatter scanners and as far as I know is not scheduled to get them. And, since the computers were down they would have been in an enhanced security mode. The woman triggered the metal detector and was then selected for an enhanced search - a procedure that's been in place since the beginning if you trigger a detector. If she has a medical device then she should have had the documentation with her. If she didn't then its her fault and she should know that if she's had the device for any amount of time. This sounds like a setup where the woman was trying to exploit the current distrust of TSA. I'm betting she follows with a lawsuit.
damiross
David Ross 0
So, in other words, if the policy is wrong just go along with it? Is that what you are saying, Dave? The policy is from the government and, of course, we all know they have our best interests at heart.

No, if the policy is wrong protest it, especially if it is clearly unconstitutional like the TSA's actions are.

Good post Jim

Welcome to the new world order, get used to it, its not going to get any better and we all know that. The minute we relax things and something bad happens people will come out of the woodwork and cry that TSA, yes the Goverment sould have done something to keep it from happening. Liberals, don't ya just love em!!!
damiross
David Ross 0
Liberal is never a tag used to describe me.
I just wish the founding fathers had said "yea, the king is taxing us and we have no say in it but, hey, that's okay. It's the government helping us."
I am not against security. I am against the TSA's version of security because it's all a facade.
kittyhawkdjs
Like I said, its not going to be getting better any time soon. As I recall after the founding fathers kicked the King out, the first thing they did was to levy a tax on "We the people".
damiross
David Ross 0
It was a tax with representation, not without.
It is possible to have the TSA provide real security if two things are done:
- political correctness is removed from the process (in other words, don't be so damn afraid of offending somebody)
- behavioral profiling is done
kittyhawkdjs
I like the profiling thing as long as its done across the board, as far a political correctness, jokingly I'm offended but have to agree we would be better off without it. Maybe a global policy??
sacolman
To escape the overdone security arrangements I keep away from USA. Since you can travel from Australia to Europe via Asian airports where scanners don't seem to break down and where you are treated politely I realise how lucky Australians and New Zealanders are.

This is the NEW WORLD ORDER promissed by G Bush back in 2000 .

The terrorists are us, the civilian population which disagrees with the government.

Now do you understand what he REALLY meant?

THE WAR AGAINST THE CITIZENS HAS BEEN ON GOING ON WHILE WE TRY TO DENY IT AND WE GET CLOBBERED BY THE NEW MILITARY CONTROLLED STATE AND LOCAL COPS.YES SIR , NO SIR

the way to Beat the TSA is to Stop Flying Commercially and help put the airlines out of business. No Airlines No TSA...
But Wait theres more
Soon the TSA will be sitting at Every Small General aviation airport patting down every Pilot trying to Fly the aircraft that they Privatly own. when that day Comes its Time to move out of the Country. Hell just think about this....They raised the Tolls in NYC again. It cost a minimum of 22 dollars a day Just in Tolls to go from NJ to NY and Back. Not including Fuel or Parking.. keep telling the Port cops at the toll plaza. when it hits $14 their boss is fired. or did you get a raise with this increase Im sure your boss did.
they Need to Riase the Tolls to purchase new TANKS. as bullet proof vests wont protect them anymore. Soon its going to be a free for all.someone is going to go Nuts. Its bound to happen. the question is when?
kb9uwu
After you, Neil. Sounds like you're ready.

how is it that despite flying several times a month to various parts of the us (and internationally somewhat less frequently) I have NEVER had a security related problem?

Dont waste your time reading up if you are going to rationalize that it is illogical or impossible that things can be so bad. If you prefer to believe there is no conspiracy, well you deserve what you get. Unfortunately your children will suffer from your decisions because of your total ignorance.
Remember , information is very potent. Would that be why there is so much emphasis on keeping secrets in the masonic lodges ?

Inform yourself, find out the enemy`s weaknesses, inform the rest of the population ,plan well, use the enemy `s weaknesses and re establish justice and order.

The prisons and detention camps they built for us ,they will occupy themselves .

The good cops are better wake up too because right now , they are accomplices and their place will be in those jails and death camps.

Ray1939 I provided references for smart people to inform themselves.
You are not serious enough to even protect yourself. I hope you are not a pilot.
The situation is a result of too many people with a mind like yours.

And Frank Martinoli, as you are calm , read up the links I provided .I bet your calm and composure will disappear. With the facts in hand you would be better equipped to make comments.

Enough said.

However this is not the place fo such talk. Get a grip.

The cowardice of the ACLU is evident in this whole TSA mess. TSA says that they are within the law. While I generally hate the ACLU if they had any balls these search laws would be immediately tested in the courts.
bcfd29
whatever happened to this being an aviation forum, and not a soapbox for psychos? ron ron, if you are a licensed pilot then you illustrate clearly the need for better screening in GA given that extreme paranoia might be considered cause to lift your ticket. wait: listen, they (WE) are coming for YOU next!

I found this at NBC news this evening. I hope NBC doesn't mind me using it. It concerns several airports opting out of direct TSA coverage. Interesting article. It's not a solution, but maybe a more reasonable way to do business.

I can't believe the blaming of Obama that goes on here. Sure, the backscatter scanners have re-emerged under him since the 12/25/09 attempt, but the underlying problem is the biggest expansion of government in generations that was launched by Bush. He is the one that set in motion the vast new security apparatus that is on its way to turning the land of the free and home of the brave into a Police State catering to cowards. ("...it makes me feel safer [when that rape victim was thrown to the ground for now being groped]"). And thanks to his supreme court picks, soon enough it will be illegal to complain about Security Operations, too!
