Whai is the last thing a pilot must do before leaving the plane after a wheels up landing? Put the gear lever in the down position
In 45 years of flying, the most damage I've done has been grass landing (unplanned)!
Landing in the grass gives you a much better chance of if digging in and flipping over. Generally speaking, when there is an accident or incident, as long as you keep it on the runway you're pretty much a hero...if you leave the pavement by even one inch, they hang you. This is personal experience talking, not just theory.
