Wait, let me get this straight. Crashing into another plane doesn't prompt a return to the gate but nuts not served in a bowl does??? Really?
pilot62
No I just heard they're gonna hang her
ay0503
Nahh there is no hanging in Korea and even if there was hanging shes rich she would jut bribe them

If it was past V1 stopping would've been much worse!
stevecostello
Holy sensationalist headline, Batman. I'd be willing to wager that by the time the flight crew was made aware of the incident, they were already past V1, therefore they basically HAD to "take off anyway."
mhlansdell00
Yup. There ya go.

Liked the comment on no warnings sounded. They don't have car alarms on them like new cars also what they do have is for airborne avoidance not taxi as it would be going off all the time at that rate. Oh well another wanna be reporter.
mhlansdell00
I don't know a of any equipment with an alarm that the operator actually collided with something. Why would someone think that an aircraft would have an alarm therefor multiple sensors to indicate a "fender bender" or a winglet rub. It tickles me to listen to the confusion caused by travel in the 3rd dimension.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 0
Gee whiz, even today's cars warn you when you're crossing out of your lane, and will stop your vehicle for you if you don't if you're about to crash into something.
WALLACE24
Well Donna, that should allow the driver to have a nice Merlot while driving. :-)
jbbooks1
Wrong, see above. Taxi and take off are altogether different.
lynx318
lynx318 3
He said "made aware of" as in by the tower, not that they were aware directly. As it was they were already in flight when tower recalled them.
lboyette
It'll buff out. Best that we keep going.
gearup328
You know, I just can't even comment on this. The reporting was unreal. Was this on taxi? Was this on takeoff roll? On takeoff, under 80KIAS you abort for anything. After 80KIAS you only abort for a major alarm. After V1, you just go. There no alarms for clipping a wing. If it was on takeoff, why the Hell was the other aircraft that close to the runway. What are hold short lines for? Once you're cleared for takeoff, you assume the path is clear. Well, don't assume anything.
jbbooks1
If it was during take off, there would have benn one hell of a mess.

LOL. On the serious side, it must not have been much for pilots not to know it and to get airborne and not feel it. They were called back in by ATC. They did not come back on their own.

You're telling me they failed to immediately respond to something they didn't notice? Shocking!
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 3
I suppose my reaction is - how could they not notice? Crunching metal isn't very quiet. Is it. And, AND, I'm not telling you, it's what is being reported they did (or didn't do).
TorstenHoff
The tip of the wing contacted the tail of the other plane. That isn't necessarily going to rock the plane or make a noise that the pilots will hear through their headphones over the usual cockpit noises, conversations with the controllers, and checklist readouts.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
Conversations. Isn't U.S. FAR 121.542/135.100, "Flight Crewmember Duties" in force during taxi? "For the purposes of this section, critical phases of flight includes all ground operations involving taxi, takeoff and landing, and all other flight operations conducted below 10,000 feet, except cruise flight."

I'm not saying this would have been the case, rather questioning if the sterile cockpit rule isn't in force at the time the planes met, therefore the conversation you mention just wouldn't be going on. (But I do see your point.)
preacher1
Sterile cockpit rule does not call for total silence, just for something that only pertains to the flight at hand and not idle conversation.
WALLACE24
I thought it meant you couldn't tell dirty jokes or use profanity. :-)
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 3
Thank goodness for you - I count on you for the voice of reason!
zurismith
Sterile cockpits are rarely adhered to in this part of the world. Advisory only for these guys.
preacher1
How do you know?
paul8626
Are the US FARs in force in Myanmar, where this incident occurred?
preacher1
Not sure but they should be if carrier flies into U.S. Sterile cockpit is pretty well universal, AND, according to the story, ATC brought them back. Apparently it was still unknown to crew after they were airborne.
30west
30west 2
AWAAlum's words, ".....conversations with controllers", i.e. radio transmissions. I think you read-over the part of his squawk where he said conversations and missed the "with controllers" part. As long as the a/c is moving, not stopped on the taxiway, the sterile cockpit rule is in effect. Radio communications are obviously during taxi.
30west
30west 1
Those were actually Torsten's words in quotes. So much for proofreading, sorry.
30west
30west 2
More proofreading needed. Radio communications are obviously OK during taxi.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
No, I saw it. I just didn't realize the sterile cockpit rule had exceptions.
30west
30west 2
Yeah, its only the non-essential communicating that is prohibited during those phases of flight. Save those good stories for cruise, pictures are OK too!! :-)

It didn't happen during takeoff, it was while taxiing for departure. If the flight crew did not
even notice, why would they return to the gate? Another hyped up excuse for journalism.
usmcflyr
usmcflyr 2
It isn't surprising that the crew didn't notice they clipped someone's tail during their takeoff roll. If you've ever been in the cockpit of an airliner screaming down the runway… it isn't exactly quiet and on some runways it feels like you're taking the ol' bus off-roading. In most cases I would say it's impossible to notice anything that doesn't swing the nose of your heavy Airbus around.
AABABY
AABABY 2
Were they on take off roll or taxiing from terminal?
preacher1
If I read the story right, they were taxiing out and then took off. ATC called them back. If all that is correct, it couldn't have done much.

What is it about Korean carriers? KAL007 navi error drifts into Soviet airspace, KAL8509 crashes off EGSS in '99 (no CRM), KAL85 gets a 9/11 escort for squawking 7700 simply b/c they're stupid, Asiana at SFO (no CRM again), li'l corporate princess's hissy fit forces a return to the gate (nuts is right).

...and your Samsung TV is listening to everything you say. ;-)
Falconus
Falconus 1
To be fair though, if you go back to 1983 (KAL007), the rest of the world has had a lot of incidents as well, often for equally dumb reasons. That being said, the fact that Korea hasn't seemed to have stopped having these incidents is fairly telling.

I know I am going to get a lot of flak for my commens herebelow but what the heck: there is no question on my mind that the training of Korean and Indonesian pilots leaves a lot to be desired. Take the Asiana 777 crashing thankfully in the first few feet at an SFO runway, they did not know what hit them. The Indonesian crew of the Air Asia 320 that for all that has been revealed shows a total lack of CRM capabilities and piloting in general. Then the Transasia ATR-72 dropping into a river after missing several high rise buildings and why: the pilots killed the functioning engine and not letting the automatic feathering system to do its thing and not only that, a few days later a full 20% of the pilots flying that fleet of the same airline failed ORAL tests, not on the simulator and I don't want to even fathom what would have happened in the future if they do not receive full re-training. And now this. If I scratch inadvertently a car when going reverse, gosh the first thing I do is STOP, check the extent and say I am sorry; their performance is not going to suffer any but clipping wings of two aircraft can alter in a severe manner the aerodynamics and even structural performance.
Falconus
Falconus 2
There does seem to be a major problem with Korean and Indonesian aviation, but the TransAsia was Taiwanese.
zurismith
Not just Korean and Indonesian - most of SE Asia. The notable exceptions are Singapore and Cathay. That's it! I wouldn't set foot on any of the others even if the ticket were free. Honest to God - I've seen so much paperwork on this, you'd do the same in my shoes.
preacher1
Well, apparently it wasn't much as they got in the air and didn't come back until recalled by ATC. Not really sure where you are coming from on AA320. All the rest I'll agree with.
chalet
chalet 3
The Indonesian aviation authorities have disclosed piecemeal some of the CVR conversations aboard the Air Asia 320 but not the entire length and it seems that the pilots were at a loss as to what they should do to recover the aircraft, possibly like what happend in the cockpit of AF447.
preacher1
There was a lot more experience there than on 447. If the upset was a bad as reported, as far as violent updraft and slamdown, I think anybody would have been confused. It isn't something you train for. It's just one of those deals you hope never happens to you. Another crew, probably same results

Air safety has a ways to go in that part of the world, which is unfortunate as it is also the fastest growing market.
mhlansdell00
Maybe sam ting. Fast growth industry = slow growth government control. Good thing, bad thing?
sgbelverta
What's scary to me is that nothing in the cockpit blinked or sounded that something might have happened. The newer airplanes seem to have lots of bells and whistles. Banging on the outside of the plane when it's moving isn't one of them?
linbb
linbb 3
And exactly how would you propose that would be installed??? Sorry only so much can be done they don't have anything on cars other than alarms if someone is too close. Visit a cockpit and see what is in one.
