As an alternative to having "plunged 20,000 feet", the crew could have started a leisurely descent to 10k. Thus alleviating the terrified of their burden by rendering them all unconscious.

A little communication would have gone a long way since most of the pax have no idea about getting to a lower altitude hastily. The story though is only terrifying to those on board.
