United 2193 from Middle Georgia Rgnl to Dulles flies a long way
Anyone have an idea why this flight went so far out of a direct path? (flightaware.com) More...Sort type: [Top] [Newest]
I may have found the answer. This flight number appears to be used for check rides or some similar activity. It has an interesting history. I should have researched this more before posting.
David, I think that you are correct with these flights being maintenance flights, but not being check rides. The majors use simulators for all their check rides with the exception of routine line checks, IOE training and checking, etc., all of which are accomplished on revenue flights.
As a former scheduler, checkrides are always performed during a scheduled flight by the chief. It was maintenance. Used to coordinate with dispatch on these type of flights.
I was going to suggest either Captain or FO check rides, or a post-maintenance check flight, or a private charter.

Darn ATC people just jerking it around.
Both those tracks give credence to the flight number probably being used for check flights without passenger service.
I was on a flight from DOH to LHR last week and we took an unusual routing over the Sinai and then up the Adriatic. Two days afer my flight on 6/22, I saw this flight on 6/24 make a huge deviation towards the "normal" flight track and then apparently get disapproved and fly all the way back to the original filed flight plan. This added an hour to the flight. I wonder what the flight planning screw up was.
