melbourne is onthe east coast of florida, adjacent to the cape kennedy air force base and the kennedy launch complex. It takes quite a while to drive on one of the east/west roads into the center of the state where orlando is located. What genius named the airport thusly, given the distance between orlando and melbourne?> Another case has been clearly made to resume teaching geography in the public schools, and also to offer remedial geography studies to all high school graduates in florida. Having flown down the center of the state at altitude, i could not help but notice the distance between the east coast and the center of the state.

Add a bit of local knowledge from the west side of the pond. 1) Melbourne Florida is quite close to the port of Cape Canaveral, which is where Disney cruises embark and return. Many tourists
make a combination cruise and theme park vacation. Or they might prefer the beaches and surf

2) Other regional airports are in the Orlando area, such as Orlando-Sanford KSFB.
Before covid, there were frequent scheduled flights from Gatwick or Manchester to Sanford. Thompsonfly, etc. Low landing fees and low congestion are the draws.

Put aside the GPS question. The scary thing to Sanford locals are the groups of arriving British tourists, renting dozens of hire cars, then proceeding to drive (for the first time) on the right hand side of the road ! Luckily, the Canadian tourists are trained to drive on the proper side.
