Because yeah.. I really wanna spend 19 hours stuck in coach. No thanks. I'd rather break a flight like that up with stops.
raleedy
Not much chance of being stuck in coach with a maximum passenger load of 49 on a 300-seater.
PDLanum
Really? Are you bitching because you were not on the TEST flight.

Read man, read.

"ladies and gentlemen, flight attendants will now be passing through the cabin with an assortment of complimentary snacks, juice, soft drinks, coffee and valium".......

How about seconobarbital taken after take off. One and one half grains.

I can't take the 15.5 hour flight from SFO to Sydney any longer. Fly Hawaiian Airlines and break up the flight with a night in Honolulu. I can spend a day in Sydney as a Zombie with the direct flight, or a night having a great meal on the ocean. Tough decision, not.

And if your not in that big of a hurry, there is also this with no jet lag whatsoever:

19 hours on a B-787-9!!!? what a torture! I did 11 hours, on Economy, and it was pure hell! and on ANA, a much better Airline!...
djames225
They won't be using B787-9's. It will either be the A350-1000 or B777X..and it wont be majority "economy" either.

Thanks for posting.
Its officially called the project Sunrise.

Interesting quote from an article in FlightGlobal. "It is conducting three simulations of Project Sunrise routes – from London and New York to Sydney – using 787-9s on "repurposed" delivery flights in October, November and December, the carrier states. The 787s will carry only around 40 people to ensure sufficient range."
Must be test flights for pilot stamina, if only 40 PAX
raleedy
These are probably not revenue flights, if I"m understanding the reports correctly. But how will they make money with a maximum occupancy rate of 15%?
djames225
No they are test flights. Going to do a LHR/SYD run and then another JFK/SYD run.
airuphere
Love how departs Friday afternoon and gets in Sunday morning..

QF7879 should be on the schedules starting 2020.

VH-ZNI was the B789 used for the trip.

Max FOB, 16 pax, no cargo and limited food on board in order to make the 90 minute minimum fuel requirements. It'll be awhile before "Project Sunrise" brings revenue flights direct to Sydney from JFK and LHR.
pilot62
Thats a lot of food and booze to carry
djames225
So this flight just barely beat the already happening JFK-Singapore run, 18 hrs 45 min.. Hopefully Qantas has paid attention to those flights, and can render like.
rboulton
Those flights are operated by Singapore Airlines with Business And Premium Economy only to give customers a lovable ride. Pigs will fly before Qantas will go without a Cattle Y class as they are only one step ahead of a LCC these days.
pilot62
Exactly what I was thinking uh eat, sleep 10 hours and I only have 12 hours in :)
DraganBuric
Good news .?
anlusome
I would really like to read official report on passengers and crew bio reactions to a such very long flight. As for me, 12 hours are enough. Every reaction counts!

Can you imagine signing up for a trip to Mars?
anlusome
Yes... at warp speed! :-)
usrepeaters
What to read? How about an obscure 800-page biography about someone you never really cared about? You will be tested when we land. Get up every 1-1/2 hours or so to walk up and down the aisle, and reduce chances of embolism.
cagle001
This should be part of the training for people who travel to Mars.
joelwiley
Use 'coach' class as a quick winnow of applicants.

HOW ABOUT 24 HOURS OF FLIGHT FROM TRAVIS AFB TO TACHIKAWA WITH 4 ENGINE PROP PLANE??????? NO WHINING.
bettiem

I'll raise you a DC-6M with loud, often maddeningly unsynchronized, Merlin engines from London to Bahrain. (Yes, I'm old.)
joelwiley
MREs or K-rations?
djames225
I'm trying to figure out which "prop plane". At least didnt have to fly from midwest to Japan in a T39 equipped C-5..rather listen to the droning noise than those dang screamers.
joelwiley
My first guess would be a C-130 given the origin.
DUTCH750i
used to fly the "Houston Express" from 2010-2015 every 30 days a 15-hour flight in Business on a 747, even that was torture after a couple of years. I CAN NOT IMAGINE, flying 19 hours in the back on the middle rows, why would you do that to yourself?
bettiem
bettiem 0
An interesting trailing edge of travel history. Soon sub-orbital travelers will recall in smug comfort. Before that's replaced by near instantaneous quantum transmission.
quark
They should put a couple of treadmills and elliptical trainers to avoid embolisms. Hey why not one of those endless pools?!

Is there a cancer-causing radiation issue too?
ah6oy
I hope the FAA has pilots banned from taking Ambien sleeping pills. Those pills cause people to sleep walk and not good if the pilot takes his shift sleep walking and not actually awake. The sleep walkers act and talk as usual and don't remember ever doing so.

Jim,

The FAA requires a 24-48 Hour wait before flight duties after taking ambien depending on dose .
williambaker08
I will downvote this because flightaware posted it twice.
iflyrjs
I use to fly/work 14.5 hr flights that was more than enough cargo is fine but not self loading cargo....ridiculous
sgbelverta
In the home stretch. Seems like most of the flight was during the night. Maybe to help sleep? But watching the ocean is a really nice way to pass the time.
pr0ject
Not really. I've made that hop before and the Pacific is vast and intimidating. The mind starts to worry about 'what ifs' quite a lot on that trip.
djames225
Know what you mean about the "what ifs". It's a bit worse on the Vancouver-Sydney run as no land is seen till Hawaii, on a B777-200LR.

Were there any survivors amongst the chattle behind 1st/Business?
joelwiley
100% of the zero pax in that class survived....
