This guy whoever he is did know how to fly. His only problem besides stealing the plane was landing. As the saying goes any landing you walk away from is a good landing since he did walk away even after crashing the plane it was a good landing.

Guess again, folks. This guy is a 51 year old alcoholic whose father owns Paramount Banner towing. And, he did not "land": he more or less (unintentionally I suppose) crashed. Alcohol does screw up one's ability to judge height after all. He turned himself in on Thursday, I think it was. He has no private pilot license, just a few hours under a student cert. And yes the CG has a beach....so what.
There is an R&R camp on that base for all branches of the military, and they have access to that beach.

The pay for the banner plane pilots over here on the Eastern Shore is about the same as working in a fast food place. My guess is that the kid is an ex employee who did it because he could. Sorry I missed the show!

That is the main Basic Training facility for the Coast Guard. The beach just happens to be on that property and is thus off limits as that's a controlled access base. There are a lot of military bases with water front access.

Camp Pendleton has lots of beach access, as does Ft. Story, Little Creek Amphibious base and others. An air force base flooded due to a hurricane some years ago even.

It is a little strip of sand on the Delaware bay. It is not a beach. Assateague is a beach. The Coast Guard gets to spend the summer rescuing Tourons off the coast of this and all the other beaches in the area. The Coast Guard men and women that I have met seem to like this assignment. Usually, they have to travel to the excitement. This time it came to them.
