The washrooms might be too large for American if they are to get the extra two rows of seats. I suppose they could remove one entire washroom to get in two more half rows.

I don’t think they’d do a mod with a space flex galley on a used plane. That requires some serious reworking of the plumbing and galley flooring areas.

Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t American buying the 737-max for this reason. I thought they were retiring the md-80’s

They've ordered 100 737 MAXs but they have to replace some 737-8s as well as the MDs. They want those MDs gone because they are so expensive to operate and it will be awhile before they get all the MAXs. Used A319s are pretty cheap since everybody's upgrading to larger aircraft (A320s and 321s), and they are nearly the same size as the MDs.
