United Airlines gets a grim gift from WOW air

送信時刻:

United Airlines — to say nothing of other major United States-based legacy carriers American Airlines and Delta Air Lines — no doubt were NOT among those feeling the cheer this morning when WOW air, the upstart Iceland-based ultra-low-fare international carrier, announced its holiday gift to travelers in Chicago and several other U.S. markets. Do you have any proof to back up your claim that Wow Air gets government subsidies or do you just invent stories that fit your view of the world?

I agree Wolfgang...must be in the same group who accused Bombardier of dumping to Delta, when NO prices were given yet...all a bunch of BS hearsay!

Good comment. Linnbb automatically thinks that it is a European airline and therefor socialist and of course must be subsidized!. I know little about WOW but hear nothing negative about their operations.

The writer has, I surmise, painfully little knowledge of political theory, and it therefore allows him to equate airlines in Europe with 'socialism'.. If he did a little reading, I believe he could make a more cogent statement.

As with many western European corporations, is is possible WOW is receiving some type of central government subsidy
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 3
Ken, do you have any proof of Wow receiving government subsidies? Remember, this is an independent low cost carrier, and they do generally fly on their own. They are in competition to Iceland’s flag carrier Loftleidir.
devsfan
ken young -3
I clearly stated that the existence of government subsidies is POSSIBLE.
Where you saw "definitely" is a mystery
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 5
Ken, where do I say definitely? Saying that it is possible that WOW receives government subsidies doesn’t mean a thing, it is equally possible they don’t receive any subsidies from their government. That would be more in line with recent Icelandic government policies as well.
devsfan
ken young -4
Holy crap.
Hey genius. I merely pointed out the possibility that WOW may receive subsidies
Why are you arguing? Just to argue?
Or are you a Euro that gets defensive when they read/hear others mention said subsidies?
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 4
Ken, no need to become agressive, it’s usually the sign of the loser in the discussion. You can simply admit that you have no clue of what you are talking about as far as Icelandic governments and policies are concerned.
devsfan
ken young -5
It was not I who became belligerent. That prize goes to you. Instead of just leaving my comment as is on its face, you insisted it was an indication of an argument.
"Loser"? Funny< did I mention anything about a game.
Look genius. I have your number.
You are one of these arrogant Euros who thinks they are better than us "uncivilized non socialist Americans".
Here's a newsflash for you. Government subsidies to business abound in western Europe. THAT is a fact.
Now shut up. Discussion terminated.
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 3
Well Ken, you are digging even deeper, too bad for you. You are jumping to conclusions without the slightest evidence. Where do you get that I'm European?

You started calling names, for example "arrogant Euro", "genius" and you pretend that this is not agressive?

Now if someone posts something patently false he should not be surprised that his ignorance is pointed out.
devsfan
ken young -3
Yes, There is a POSSIBILTY that some kind of subsidy is offered.
I see other gang up posts, jumping on the "you OWE IT to us to check Icelandic Law before you dare to post here" bandwagon. That's definitely absent of passive aggressive type response.
Pffft. Hey, your sandbox. I'm out.
One last question. Why on earth is it so important to all of you that WOW is NOT subsidized? What's it to you>?
rapidwolve
rapidwolve 2
Wasn't a gang-up at all...You made a comment, another poster disagreed with it, and you went ballistic agressive..you started knocking western European corps and subsidies they get, but not once did you say a thing about North American corps...and then you start bashing the folks from Europe "You are one of these arrogant Euros who thinks they are better than us "uncivilized non socialist Americans"." You think that kind of comment doesn't rile some people?
Nothing to do with or with out subsidies!
devsfan
ken young -1
I loathe to get drawn into this garbage, but since you opened the door.
What do North American companies have to do with this discussion?
Is WOW an entity in any way partly owned by a compnay based in North America? No? Then why inject this issue? Perhaps an offset? Uh huh.
There was not a knock on Western Euro companies. I mere stated a FACT. That yes, western European governments in accordance to law, do indeed subsidize private sector businesses. If you view that as a "knock", that's your problem.

BTW, I used to have to interact with many nationals from western European countries. For the most part, nice people. However, too often I have to deal with some of them, not ALL, but some, making statements on matters of politics and of course how their countries are better than the US.
Now, who has time to get into petty arguments with a foreign national working in MY country on a visa and having to listen to their criticisms?. So I'm a bit sour and jaded.
Nobody is perfect. And no one is better than anyone else. Just different. Sadly, to some discussing differences means they believe themselves to be "better". Not in my world.
We're done here. Have a wonderful day. And a better tomorrow. OUT
rapidwolve
rapidwolve 2
Your whole reply scenerio was a knock from the get go...and if you cant see the simple stupid mistakes you made and did not even think about correcting, that isn't our fault...here's a hint...plant a question mark at the end of your last sentence in your original post, and correct the second is to it...and I merely stated a fact that you did nothing but "bash" western Europe corps as thou no one else receives them...WHO THE H cares if they get subsidies.
I hear the same here..I have met some fantastic US folk, but there are those few who think their you know what doesn't smell and the US is better than everyone else..
Oh and BTW..that reply to another person (points finger south) again totally uncalled for..you more or less tossed your thot "Sadly, to some discussing differences means they believe themselves to be "better". " into the G can with that reply.
And now I am OUT!

Please do mot turn the tables and change the course of your ship...did I say anything about the US not being powerful?..maybe powerful but don't go "flinging" that power..I appreciate your opinion that you think you have the best country, as most citizens of their country would feel the same way.
This, however, IS a bashing to other nations "We are. Plus, if not for us your tirade would be in German." Ken , I don't care one way or another about subsidies, but what I don't accept at all is people saying things that are patently false.

In your case you haven't got the slightest clue about WOW air nor about Icelandic governments, but you insist they may possibly have gotten subsidies from their government. If you have any proof to offer please supply it, otherwise simply stop digging your own hole.

You are also jumping to conclusions by saying I must be European and therefore arrogant. Do you have any clue at all where I'm from? Does insisting on facts make me arrogant?

Heck for $99 plus another $45, I can get a checked bag through, a nice stopover in Iceland, and all the time I want in Europe..that and pack sandwiches and pop along with my tablet and "Bob's your uncle"

I can see passengers putting up with a 5 hour flight on wow to its Hub and then a layover and 3 to 5 hours to final destination. It would be like flying Southwest from the East Coast to Hawaii with a stopover in SFO or LAX. I would not want to fly ultra-low fair for a seven or ten hour flight without a meal and some form of entertainment. In fact being squeezed in to a coach seat for more then 2 hours I would want the ability to upgrade to Business class.
wopri
Wolfgang Prigge 3
Most flights to Europe are overnight, and I like to get at least a little sleep on them. A stop-over and change of aircraft will take quite a bit out of this window of opportunity. Taking all the factors into account, extreme cheap flights are not for me.
hmhines31
Howard Hines 4
WOW is very misleading in advertising, by the time you look at ALL the costs of a Return ticket to Europe via its hub in Iceland. They'll post a cheap outbound price alright, but by the time you see ALL of the add-ons, i.e., seat, ticket reservation, adm. cost, check-thru bag, FOOD, etc., etc., for each of the four legs of a trip to Europe, the cost is actually MORE than the cost of flying a major carrier; the jacked-up Inbound price back to your U.S. departure city is what is the coup-de-grace, of making the whole thing more expensive. WOW is a disappointment to this budget traveler. You can go to budget air sales operators and do far better on price with all the perks built in to a phenomenally low price rd. Trip.
rapidwolve
rapidwolve 1
How are they anymore misleading than 99.9% of the other carriers "1 way fares"??..and who said you had to return with them??..once in Europe, hunt around for a low cost haul back to the US...and also this
"Still, WOW is, in essence, now doing internationally what United (NYSE: UAL), American (NASDAQ: AAL) and Delta (NYSE: DAL) are doing on their domestic routes, offering a barebones basic economy fare that includes just the airfare and one personal carry-on. Everything else is extra."
Go price out a 1 way flight, on a major US carrier for April next year, from ORD to say Copenhagen and see what the price is!

I visited KEF last April and bought a $99 one way ticket to KEF from MIA and a $99 one way ticket back to MIA. No $ add ons. Great price and service.
Brucknermari
Brucknermari 2
This is a clever gimmick. Once the heavy European taxes are added the ticket will be hundreds of dollars. Clever because people are talking. I recently saw a $1 fare that priced out to over $400 because of the taxes. Don’t be fooled.

Know that WOW Air is in a different league as far as airlines go. You may get cheaper prices, but usually with one flight every few days, there is little chance for a timely backup when with mechanical / crew delays and/or schedules go awry.
seosamh3
Yes Yes 2
Check the fine print . 99 dollar fare is for a person traveling light. Gets no food have to bring your own more cost , wants to fly to Iceland , have a extra take of and landing each way , hope the connecting flight is not delayed. Will have to buy new cloths when you arrive in Europe cause you can’t bring any with you that’s extra. Remember back in the last century an airline use to fly Preswick Scotland via Iceland to Buffalo US cold place Iceland .Thankfully were in the 21cent were Flight can cross the alantic without stopping if you shop around you can get a cheap flight . Aer lingus for one out of Chicago, Boston year round etc. What in for Wow to bring you to Iceland when they also could cross the alantic without stopping . Surely the most expensive part of the trip for any airline is take offs and landings why add more than you have to unless your being paid to do so

Wowair is a registered airline of Iceland/ based in KEF. Per requirements of UN / ICAO cabotage rules, they have not yet acquired the "fifth freedom rights" needed to fly nonstop between two other foreign countries. They must land in KEF.

I have heard very little about this European "upsart" low fare carrier..competition is always good in the marketplace, and the fares quoted are really cheap..i will say, however, that people flying from the u.s to Europe, prefer a few amenities or percs, even if they are flying coach, because those are long haul routes and not just a couple of hours..if you travel extensively, you know the benefits of packing light, but still people need some extra items and room for purchases,so adding fees for baggage, etcetera brings up the cost of the "cheap" fares"!

WOW has been flying out of BWI for several years now. While they do not have any competition at BWI 50 miles south at IAD is Icelandic. They have some very attractive fairs for outbound service with two different classes in coach. Returning is another story only Basic Coach which is a basic seat no meal no extra leg room no free bag and it is 50%T higher than the outbound fare.

Those introductory prices are a buyer beware come on fare. They get you on the return flight. They are not going to lose money, not when they have a captive audience.
