Pe Ho. youhave no idea what you are talking about.

At that JFK gate, they hold short and tow in to the gate. The ground crew was preparing to tow, and without being marshalled, the pilot opted to power forward. When in doubt, communicate. The pilot did not. He/she also did not observe anyone marshalling the aircraft to the gate. Even with an autopark feature, the marshaller signals to the pilot to a point and then to the guide-not applicable here. Pilot error. Luckily no one was killed...and $50 bonus to the guy running away and grabbed the tow bar to keep it from getting run over!!!

How many pilots does it take to fly a 747... two and a fifth!

I'm thinking if the aircraft really was a Toyota 474. Maybe the controls are backwards?

The tug guy was probably Dancin' like Elvis. All Shook Up!

the tug guy was probally shoken up

Wow, my grammar was quite awful 3 years ago....i don't even remember posting that comment.

Mechanics do get qualified to and very often do taxi aircraft. In this case they were moving the aircraft to the gate in preparation for a future flight. There were no passengers, flight attendants or pilots on board.

I think silverhorse has the most likely explanation. Maintenance crew bringing an empty aircraft to the gate. What's the procedure for that? Can somebody not qualified/certified to fly the plane taxi it around? I've only experienced one tow in gate, at LAX at the end of a flight from BKK. After an announcement that we had to park and be towed in, we waited about 5 minutes, then taxied in under power anyway. No explanation given but presumably the pilot, after a 16 hour flight, got permission to do so when no tug was in sight. 350 people denied disembarking at the end of 16+ hours in the tube because the ground crew hasn't bothered to bring a tug around might be something you want to avoid. It was ThaiAir, which operates one flight per day in and out of LAX.

Guess the pilot never learned what "R" and "D" stand for......ha....the FAA will have a field day with this one.

Early release- sometimes more embarrassing than others.
CaseyGa1991
I guess the captain or copilot for got to set the parking break or he released to early if I'm not mistaken I believe he release it when they are pushing back. But thats crazy.

Look again. That not a Boeing 474 , it's a Japanese model Toyota 474 built under contract for Boeing.

You can plainly see that the ground crew who runs back to the line gives the flight crew the "Stop" signal - arms crossed above his head. Then they run up to hook up the tug. I work for another major and we never shut down the engines until the tug is hooked up (just make sure the nose-gear hydraulics are off before they try to hook up the tug). That way we always have brake pressure and aren't counting on the accumulators. Clearly the ground crew was NOT expecting him to taxi in and since there wasn't anyone marshaling him in he shouldn't have moved the jet. Huge communication issue here.

wow!im glad no one got heart

Right out of the movie Airplane! I was waiting for it to go through the glass.

Shadowstarz,
Yours, sir, are just about the only intelligent comments that I've read concerning this incident. Most of the comments to date are complete amateur conjecture from guys who, in all probability, don't even have a student pilot certificate. In all probability, mistakes were made on both sides of that toe bar. However it clearly seems that lack of communication will play a significant part of the failures here.

@ Frank LOL! That be more like Kyle Bush though. I work at a major airport and had to have on numerious times, tow the plane into the gate for various reasons. One one of the 1st things we do (or the mechs) is to shut down the engines. Then we approach the plane and once given the okay, it's towed in. Mistakes here from both the PIC and rampers.

NASCAR calls this a "Bump and run" Does Tony Stewart have a pilot's license?
bmcnicoll
Good thing he got it stopped before it went into the gate/terminal !!!
julianjim
Being the pilots were ex-NWA,I wounder if they spilled their drink? Only kidding! Hope there was no real nose wheel damage?
silverhorse
This was a maintenance crew repositioning the aircraft to the gate by DAL mechanics. Frtunately only ex-NWA pilots fly the airplane.

I'm surprised this doesn't happen in Atlanta more...out of pilot frustration! In the last month, there have been two occasions of the catering trucks parked blocking the gate. Pilot has to just wait indefinitely for the idiots to move the damn truck. They have a plane full of people, most needing to make a connection (including the pilots), and they have to wait for a fricking catering truck to move at one of the busiest, most crowded airports in the country. Ridiculous. Kudos to the patience of the pilots.

Cool video, but was it just me or was the click through to liveleak.com covered with porn? Just saying. LOL

I would not judge any individual situation aithout the full facts. What I can say in general terms is that if you had told me that this had happened and asked me to guess which airport, JFK would have been at the top of my list. I regularly park a 747 there and have learned to be very dubious about any ground signals. This is not the fault of the individual marshaller, but they are patently given no proper training. I have no idea how this can possibly be the case at a major US hub.
wahooncx
@Richard Elmquist...Bingo!

That was a quick thinking "rampy" who got the towbar out of the way! :-) Seriously, though, it looks like just about any incident: the culmination of several errors and failure to follow procedures.

I have seen this before. Pilots stop the aircraft because there is something in the way. No ground crew is on the radio. Ground crew thinks pilot is going to shutdown and tow in (as required by operations manual if something is within 10 feet). Pilots cannot see the crew under the aircraft and decide to continue the taxi in. Moving a 747 takes about 60% power to start from a dead stop. It is really hard to judge momentum from 40 feet up with that much power.
ABQOOHP
Make note, that at many large airports with congested gates, they may require a/c of all sizes to be towed in. I cant wait to see our safety reviews at work.
ABQOOHP
It appears to me from the video, that the procedure at this may be a "tow-in" gate. The ground crew was in the process of hooking up the towbar, when one of the ramp members ran back to the spotting point and raised his hands. It may have confused the PIC into thinking he needed to taxi forward, hence he released his brakes, and all hell broke loose, and you saw rampers running for their lives. This happened in OAK to a COA ramp crew towing a NWA Airbus a few years back. Lets see what kind of safety review and procedures come from this incident.

Just remember that all the Delta 747 crews are old-Northwest guys...

Wow! who did what? Did they forget the chocks? Or did the engine throttle up? Someone will have some explaning to do.

Something that never made our local news ... Now I know why, I don't fly Delta !!

the engines had to be running, notice how fast it started rolling toward the tug from a standstill? Someone must have moved up the power levers, don't think a 370 ton -400 would start rolling like that by itself. Both are at fault in my opinion, why did the marshaller walk off to the side and out of sight? And why did the tug crew not connect to intercom to communicate with the crew?
mriah32
Dude he hit the tug twice, why did they stop short of the line in the first place, at first I was thinking it was ground's fault..that was definitely the crews boo boo..u can't tell whether the engines are still running or not..
kayjay58
Just glad no one got hurt. Maybe the PIC or SIC forgot to set the parking brake.
