A fairly popular and intriguing video; I would recommend it for anyone that hasn't seen it! (www.youtube.com) さらに...

A great search and a subsequent post, keep it up Rohit.

I fully agree, visiting SXM has to be on my bucket list. And thank you, will do!

Rohit...I thought making that severe right turn over Checkerboard Hill was the end of my "Bucket List"! Not to mention...the space between your wing-tip to the high-rise apartments is appox. 500ft! Pucker-up people...we're goin' in!!! Walked away from another one!
akayemm
500 ft ! Wow !
I wonder, if ever some passenger shouted or demanded, 'here is my flat, please let me out ! '

If you had an apartment there...one would get to know their neighbors...real quick!
akayemm
Do I read you right ? 'Know their neighbors' means that 'see what you won't otherwise' !
eh ! ;-)

Landing at Kai Tak was always an adventure. There were skid marks on the roof of some Kowloon buildings.

As a landing aid there was a checkerboard painted on a hill to visually know when to turn in the very tight base and final.

It was certainly dangerous, but damn it was fun.

yeah it was, but you always brought clean drawers and fresh pants.LOL
Moviela
Now that was a different skid mark than the one I was talking about!

A Life Experience for me was Chinese New Years dinner (an all day event) at the family home of my resident mate's family in their ancestral compound located hard against the last marker going into Kai Tak. As the aircraft passed overhead every three to five minutes, conversation and even eating would stop until the noise passed and everyone resumed as if they had just taken a deep breath.

Coming into Kai Tak was always an experience, and you always ran the chance of being invited for dinner.
Excellent video and beautiful scenery!

In the similar vein, I adore the geographical location of Princess Juliana Airport in St. Maarten in the Carribean.

This place may be Mecca for spotters, due to ease and proximity !

This film is great....have seen before and brings back memories of landing at Kai Tak in 1998 around 6 months before it closed.

Must have been a hair raising experience , notwithstanding your long experience at the stick !
Roaming on this portal has given me (a passenger) an insight to the plight of a pilot during the flight, from (-)00.00.00 hr to touch down time(arrival at designated gate)and door opening!
Though I did have 'some idea' but not in such details.
My 'hats off' to you and your creed. May your tribe grow and glow, always.

I did that approach a number of times as a 727 S/O, DC10 F/O and 747 F/O. It was not difficult if you remember a few things:

1. It's a visual maneuver from the missed approach point onwards. (Okay, this is where a number of pilots have problems, refer to the Asiana SFO accident discussion.)

2. Don't start your turn early.

3. Don't start your turn late.

4. You only need 15° bank (provided you follow 2 & 3 above.

It kinda seems that #2 & #3 was what made folks pucker. LOL

I was outstationed in Phnom Penh working for a HK based airline in 1998. 2 days before Kai Tak moved to CLK, I flew back to HK and specially asked for a jump seat in order to get a last chance of this amazing view of landing in runway 1-3.

Kai Tak what can be said, an airport so dangerous that it was among the safest. Sure a few planes over ran the runway and ended up in the bay. I know of far safer airports that have had many more accidents and more loss of life. One thing for sure a more thrilling or scenic approach I have yet to find.

You are probably correct in that everybody was on their game going in there and did things by the numbers. It was unforgiving in that you knew what it was before you went in there. Those that weren't on their game or took it lighthearted are the ones that wound up in the bay, or at least going around and a little more conditioned approach. Everybody was afraid of going around though because that was not a great alternative but once you did get down, the razzing from the other pilots was generally unmerciful. LOL

As a passenger several times in the '80s, I was amazed that you could actually see into the windows of some of the buildings that we passed 'next to'. The folks up front made it feel just fine. I don't know who they were...but they were pros. Thanks!

So, that's what they call "maneuvering flight"?

Hey Ken...you gotta do what you gotta do and put that bird on rwy 13. To make our experience more dramatic...we were flying in the tail of a "Typhoon", which makes you double pucker! The "crab" was extreme...like it is most of the time at Kai Tak. It most definately a rush...if you're in to extreme!

I was being a bit sarcastic. Lack of positive control along with monitoring speed and attitude tend to be the killer during maneuvering flight. A Cirrus crash in Florida a couple years ago comes to mind. It was repositioning and stalled during a turn to the runway.

It can only get more interesting when you're dealing with a large aircraft of several hundred thousand pounds flying very low, very slow and banking tight to make the runway. You cannot do that without being very vigilant of all factors.

I would surmise such an approach can be done only by a pilot who respects basic stick and rudder skills more than any amount of automation. The only thing more dangerous is a pilot who does not understand how the automation works nor what happens when one or more components fail.

Dee:I don't believe all through the years, that I have seen any landing video, landed one there or watched one land, without crab of some kind cranked in, minor or extreme. I think they'ed have had to carry me out if a straight in would have ever come along. LOL

Dee Lowry 1
You're so right, preacher. A straight in final would put most everybody over the edge. Lol

Great video. And the choice of the theme from '633 Squadron' was perfect...
