That's an awesome shot. Just off of the cockpit windows is the grain elevator on my family farm!

I had forgotten that Hawaiian operated the DC8. This is the ultra long range super 62 version. Number 2 engine cowl looks like she needs a wipe over. Nice grain elevator too Patrick.

I checked the weights on the super 62 model for the DC8. Her full tanks maximum fuel capacity was 23,900 US gallons or just a tad over 160,000 pounds. Her maximum takeoff weight was 335,000 pounds. But her max ramp/taxi weight was 338,000 pounds. So with a basic empty operating weight of around 145,000 pounds, she could fly non stop from SYD to LAX 6500nm with slightly less than a maximum payload. In the very early '70s, even the B747 could not do that sector nonstop. They had to refuel in HNL.
