Southwest Flight Declares Emergency in St. Louis: Engine Failure

In the last 30 minutes, a Southwest Airlines flight to Sacramento declared an emergency due to an engine failure, prompting a return to St. Louis.

Information remains limited regarding this emergency, but below is what we know so far with this.

Southwest Airlines flight WN5907, the flight involved in the emergency, is a routine scheduled flight between St. Louis and Sacramento.

The affected rotation that was operating the flight is N8648A.

As per data from Planespotters.net, N8648A is a 9.7 year old Boeing 737-800 that was delivered to the airline in September 2014.

This aircraft does not long belong to the MAX family.

Of the 737-800 variant, Southwest Airlines has 207 of them in the fleet.

Within the 207, all but 10 are in active service, hosting an average fleet age of 8.7 years.

Southwest Airlines flight WN5907 departed St. Louis at 1503 local time earlier this afternoon.

Minutes after departure, the crew onboard declared an emergency via the 7700 squawk code.

After over 20 minutes in the air, the aircraft landed safely without further incident.

As per @FlightEmergency on X, Southwest Airlines flight WN5907 declared an emergency in St. Louis due to an engine failure on the climb out.

The next steps for this aircraft will be the withdrawal from service.

This is so then maintenance technicians can take a look at the affected engine and make the relevant fixes.

All eyes will be on how long it will take this aircraft to return to commercial service following this emergency.
