Bombardier has delivered its first 86-seat Dash 8 Q400 aircraft to launch customer Nok Air.

This is part of the Thai low-cost carrier’s order in November 2013 for up to eight Q400 turboprops. Nok now has firm orders for six Q400s, with purchase rights for two additional aircraft.

“With the lowest seat-mile costs in the short-haul regional market and unmatched operational flexibility, the Q400 NextGen turboprop is the ideal complement to Nok Air’s growth strategy,” says Frank Baistrocchi, regional vice president, Asia Pacific Sales, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

“We’re confident that Nok Air will successfully showcase the flexibility and adaptability of the extra capacity Q400 NextGen aircraft as it makes point-to-point regional air service more accessible to an increased number of travelers in the region.”

Nok has said that its new Q400s will replace the two ATR 72s in the airline’s fleet and also allow it to grow its network domestically and on regional routes.

Chief executive Patee Sarasin previously told Flightgloabal it decided to turn to Bombardier and away from ATR because of the higher capacity and speed that the Q400 is capable of. Bombardier is pitching its high density Q400 as the ready answer to market demand for a larger turboprop.
