I can't watch that video - the ending breaks my heart. No way I could watch that again.
A beautiful aircraft and a very remarkable photo. If you read the book, you can almost understand the risks taken to recover KeeBird. Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the book but it is very exciting reading. I am not sharing how this story ended.

That was one of the saddest things I ever watched.

Looks as if the tail section cracked on impact?

Read a book years ago by John Ball called "Phase Three Alert" about the recovery of a bomber from the ice.

Sounds similar.

I dont think there are new pictures of this B29. If you watch the video, you will see why.

Blueashflyer - Same reaction here. Even though I sensed the recovery effort wasn't successful due to the way the TV documentary title was worded/promoted, the way it ended resulted in lost sleep that night. Very sad.

That is very neat. I wonder what the history is...

whereas the uTube video is gone;

In May 1995, Greenamyer returned with additional personnel. The repairs were completed and the aircraft prepared to take off from the frozen lake on 21 May 1995. A crude runway was carved out of the snow on the ice using the small bulldozer that had been ferried into the site. The new engines were successfully started for the takeoff attempt. As Darryl Greenamyer was taxiing the aircraft onto the frozen lake, the jury-rigged fuel tank of the B-29's "putt-putt" auxiliary power unit began to leak gasoline into the rear fuselage. Fire broke out and quickly spread to the rest of the aircraft. The cockpit crew escaped unharmed, but cook/mechanic Bob Vanderveen, who was visually monitoring the engines from the rear of the aircraft, suffered smoke inhalation and flash burns.[6]
